Farrier Report: Using Glushu for Donkey Keratoma Removal Support

Keratoma removal in equine feet presents unique challenges, especially when working with smaller animals like donkeys. Providing stable, protective support during and after surgery is critical to promote healing and maintain hoof integrity. Expert farrier Joseph Santos shares his experience using Glushu glue-on shoes to support a donkey undergoing keratoma removal, highlighting practical techniques and benefits that farriers and equine caretakers can apply.

From Joseph Santos

“This Keratoma removal is on a donkey. This was definitely the smallest foot I’ve ever resected. I chose a Glushu size 9.5 which you’ll see is equivalent to a 4x0. You’ll see in these images it’s a very small shoe.

I chose this shoe for a no impact application. Also, being that if you resection size changes, the shoe cuff is easily removable for a larger resection window.

I added soft impression material for hoof capsule stability. I also applied a hospital treatment plate for extra protection. I always support my foot before any type of resection’s.

Using this style cuff Glushu shoe makes it really easy and very durable. These feet can be soaked, and the resection can be cleaned multiple times throughout the rotation without the integrity of the foot being lost.”

Glushu Benefits

One of the standout advantages of using Glushu glue-on shoes in this case is their durability. These shoes can withstand soaking, which is often necessary for cleaning and treating the resection site. The shoe maintains its hold even after multiple cleanings and treatments throughout the rotation period.

This durability means the farrier and veterinarian can perform repeated care without worrying about losing shoe integrity or causing additional damage to the hoof. The glue-on system also simplifies shoe removal and replacement, making it easier to adjust treatment as needed.

Practical Takeaways for Farriers and Caretakers

  • Select the right size: Glushu offers small sizes suitable for donkeys and small equines, ensuring a proper fit.

  • Use removable cuffs: This feature allows flexibility if the resection size changes.

  • Add soft impression material: It supports the hoof capsule and improves comfort.

  • Apply a hospital treatment plate: Provides extra protection during healing.

  • Choose glue-on shoes for no-impact application: Minimizes trauma and simplifies shoeing.

  • Expect durability: Glushu shoes hold up well to soaking and repeated cleaning.
